She is the artist of the moment in Spain. In addition, her performance at Eurovision representing Spain, as well as the third place achieved and the reception she received upon returning from Italy confirmed her as one of her most beloved people.
However, it wasn’t always all rosy for Chanel Terrero. The condition of a racialized person in Spain made her endure all kinds of racist insults and attacks from her childhood until now.
Controversy surrounded Chanel Terrero since the Benidorm Fest, where her election as representative of Spain raised dust and unleashed a lot of hatred on social networks. In fact, the Cuban -born artist had to temporarily close her social networks. But since May 12 everything took a 180-degree turn, becoming one of her most acclaimed faces. Chanel Terrero prefers to put her feet on the ground and reveal some episodes of her past in an interview for La Vanguardia, where she suffered what no one should suffer: racism.
The Hispanic-Cuban woman felt “less than the others”
Chanel Terrero was born in Cuba, but since her childhood she moved to Barcelona, the city where she grew up. In the interview with the aforementioned media, the singer does not forget the sad episodes that immigrants unfortunately often experience. When Chanel was little, she says, she was very afraid of these types of attacks: I even believed what they told me, and I thought ‘of course, this is not my country. I am less than the others’. She was barely 10 years old.
“Fucking black woman”, “go to your fucking country”
The artist recalled that the harassment came from both school and the street. And not only verbally, but also physical violence, such as stone throwing. “Millions of times she came home crying, ” explains Chanel. However, she found support by telling her family and friends: No matter how much they told me at school ‘you fucking nigger’ or ‘go to your fucking country’, I focused on other things.
Despite everything, the racist insults that Chanel Terrero had to endure also came from immigrants. According to the singer, at school, boys and girls of Arab descent shouted insults at her: ” The fact that there is racism among rationalized people is even stronger.”
Chanel responds: “Maybe you should read a little more”
“It’s very funny because when I talk about this with white people like you, they are surprised. And that gives me the clue that there is still a long way to go in this society. I have suffered racism on public transport, in the Post Office…”, comments Chanel.
Now, Chanel manages all that hate differently, but she doesn’t take a step back from any lack of respect she may receive: “I don’t break down, and I don’t keep quiet. I don’t get into arguments, because I think you lose, because a person like that has a very closed mind, but politely I tell them:’ maybe you should read a little more or educate yourself’ without being derogatory.
